Polished concrete floors, Lancashire and the Ribble Valley

Polished Concrete Floors — Lancashire

Polished concrete is the floor that cannot be replicated. Because no two concrete slabs are the same, different aggregate, different mix, different history, no two polished concrete floors are ever identical. The grinding process reveals what is already there: the natural character locked inside the slab, brought to the surface and refined to the finish level you choose. The result is something genuinely one-of-a-kind.

It is also one of the most durable, low-maintenance and thermally efficient floors you can have. No joints to crack. No tiles to chip. No grout to discolour. Just a hard, seamless surface that gets better with age. At Ribble & Stone, we approach every polished concrete project the way Michael approaches everything, methodically, with proper equipment, and without cutting corners on the stages that matter most.

What is Polished Concrete?

Polished concrete is not a coating applied over a floor, it is the floor itself, refined. Using industrial diamond grinding equipment with progressively finer tooling, we mechanically abrade the existing concrete surface through multiple passes, removing surface imperfections and working progressively deeper into the slab. A chemical concrete densifier is applied during the process, this penetrates the surface and chemically reacts with the concrete to harden and strengthen it from within. The floor is then polished with fine diamond pads to the agreed sheen level and finished with a protective penetrating sealer.

The grinding process inevitably reveals what is in the concrete, aggregate stones, air voids, previous repairs, the natural colour variation of the mix. This is not a flaw; it is the defining characteristic of polished concrete. Every floor tells its own story.

Where We Install Polished Concrete Floors

Polished concrete floor barn conversion Lancashire by Ribble and Stone Coatings

Barn Conversions and Rural Properties

Polished concrete and barn conversions are a natural pairing, the agricultural heritage of the building and the rawness of the material speak the same language. An existing agricultural slab, often already substantial and well-established, is an ideal candidate for polishing. The result is a floor that feels completely authentic to the building while meeting the demands of a premium residential conversion. Highly sought after by architects and interior designers working on rural Lancashire projects.

Polished concrete floor contemporary home Lancashire

Contemporary Homes

In a new-build or recently renovated contemporary home, polished concrete delivers an architectural finish that is impossible to achieve with any other material at any price. The seamless surface, the subtle aggregate reveal, the cool tactile quality, it creates a foundation that makes every other element in the room look more considered. Works equally well with underfloor heating, with which concrete's thermal mass makes an exceptionally efficient pairing.

Showrooms and Commercial Interiors

Car showrooms, kitchen showrooms, furniture stores, premium retail, polished concrete is the floor of choice for commercial spaces that want to communicate quality, permanence and considered taste. It handles heavy commercial foot traffic exceptionally well, requires minimal ongoing maintenance, and creates a backdrop that lets the products being sold take centre stage.

Polished concrete industrial conversion floor Lancashire

Industrial and Warehouse Conversions

Former mill buildings, warehouse conversions and light industrial spaces often already have extensive concrete slabs in good structural condition, ideal candidates for polishing. Transforming an existing industrial floor into a polished concrete surface is one of the most cost-effective ways to dramatically improve the appearance and usability of a conversion, whether residential or commercial.

Finish Levels, Choosing Your Sheen

01

Industrial Matte

The flattest, most raw finish. Visible surface texture, natural aggregate character, low reflectivity. The most authentic polished concrete aesthetic, popular for barn conversions and industrial settings.

02

Satin

A refined surface with a subtle, smooth sheen. The most popular finish for contemporary homes, enough refinement to feel premium, enough texture to feel natural.

03

Semi-Gloss

A clear, smooth surface with noticeable reflective quality. Excellent for showrooms and commercial interiors where light reflection adds perceived space.

04

High Gloss

A mirror-like surface with maximum light reflection. The most dramatic finish, best suited to large, well-lit commercial and hospitality spaces.

Finish level is agreed and demonstrated on a test area before full installation begins.

The Polished Concrete Process

  1. 01

    Slab assessment

We inspect the existing concrete for structural integrity, hardness, moisture levels and any previous treatments or contamination. Not all slabs are suitable, we tell you honestly at the site visit.

  2. 02

    Coarse grinding

Industrial diamond grinding equipment removes the surface layer of the concrete, levels any imperfections and begins to expose the aggregate below. This stage determines how much of the concrete's character will be revealed.

  3. 03

    Crack and void repair

Any cracks, pinholes or voids revealed during grinding are filled with a colour-matched grout before polishing continues. This is done carefully to preserve the natural aesthetic.

  4. 04

    Densifying

A chemical concrete densifier is applied and worked into the surface. This penetrates the slab and chemically hardens it from within, essential for a durable, long-lasting polish.

  5. 05

    Progressive honing and polishing

Using progressively finer diamond tooling through multiple passes, the surface is brought to the agreed finish level. This is the stage that takes the most time and skill.

  6. 06

    Sealing

A penetrating protective sealer is applied to the finished surface, providing stain resistance and protecting the polish. Anti-slip treatment applied as standard on all residential floors.

Most polished concrete projects take 2 to 4 days. We use dust extraction equipment throughout, the process is significantly cleaner than most clients expect.

Frequently Asked Questions, Polished Concrete Floors Lancashire

What is a polished concrete floor?

+

Polished concrete is an existing concrete slab that has been mechanically ground using progressively finer diamond tooling, densified with a chemical hardener, and then polished to a chosen level of sheen, from industrial matte through to a high-gloss mirror finish. Every polished concrete floor is unique because the grinding process reveals the natural aggregate and character of the specific concrete mix.

Do I need an existing concrete floor for polished concrete?

+

Yes. Polished concrete works with your existing concrete slab. If you do not have an existing slab, a new concrete floor would need to be laid first before polishing can begin. We assess your existing floor at the site visit to confirm suitability.

What finish levels are available for polished concrete?

+

We offer four finish levels: industrial matte (a flat, low-sheen finish with visible surface texture), satin (a refined surface with a subtle sheen), semi-gloss (smooth with a clear reflective quality) and high gloss (a mirror-like, highly reflective surface). The finish level is agreed before work begins.

How long does polished concrete take to install?

+

Most residential polished concrete floors take 2 to 4 days depending on size, the condition of the existing slab and the desired finish level. Commercial floors may take longer. We provide a precise timeline at the site visit.

How much does polished concrete cost in Lancashire?

+

Polished concrete floors start from £75 per square metre, inclusive of grinding, densifying, honing and sealing to your chosen finish level. The final price depends on the existing condition of the slab and the finish level chosen. Every project is quoted after a free site visit.

Is polished concrete suitable for underfloor heating?

+

Yes. Concrete is an excellent conductor of heat and polished concrete floors perform very well with underfloor heating systems. The dense, seamless surface distributes heat evenly and efficiently across the whole floor.

Is polished concrete slippery?

+

A highly polished concrete floor can be slippery when wet. We apply a penetrating anti-slip treatment to all residential polished concrete floors as standard, and can discuss specific slip-resistance requirements for commercial applications. The matte and satin finishes naturally provide more grip than high-gloss.

How do I maintain a polished concrete floor?

+

Polished concrete requires very little maintenance. Daily sweeping or dust mopping and occasional damp mopping with a pH-neutral cleaner keeps the floor in excellent condition. We recommend resealing every 3 to 5 years depending on traffic levels.

How Does Polished Concrete Compare to Other Floor Systems?

vs Microcement

Microcement is a coating applied over the floor. Polished concrete is the floor itself, refined. Microcement is the better choice where you want precise colour control or where the existing concrete is not suitable for polishing. Polished concrete is the better choice where you want to celebrate the natural character of the slab and achieve a truly unique result.

vs Epoxy and Polyaspartic Systems

Epoxy and polyaspartic flake systems are the practical choice for garages, workshops and utility spaces, fast, durable and cost-effective. Polished concrete is the design choice for living spaces, barn conversions and commercial interiors where aesthetics are the primary consideration.

vs Tiles

Tiles crack, grout discolours, and edges chip. Polished concrete is a single seamless surface with no joints, no grout and no maintenance beyond occasional mopping. The lifetime cost of polished concrete is almost always lower than tiled alternatives.
